Yesteryear Collection

William Alchin of Northampton, established in 1847, was one of the pioneers among traction engine builders, which were the most economical form of transporting heavy loads for nearly a century.
Built in 1925, this single cylinder engine weighing 9 1/2 tons could pull up to 38 tons and was capable of producing 32 brake H.P., it was the last traction engine made by William Allchin Ltd.
Unfortunately very few are left working to-day, but enthusiasts are buying these fine examples of engineering for preservation and may be seen from time to time at traction engine rallies.

The first of the line of Models of Yesteryear was the (Y1-1) 1925 Allchin Traction Engine. It was one of three models launched in 1956. It is a tiny model, but really pretty and well modelled. Production ran from 1956 through to 1965 so it was a good long run and there are a number of these around making the commonly found variants fairly modestly priced.
Note that the correct spelling is Allchin with two 'L's but on the endflap of the box the spelling is Alchin with one 'L'.

Variations/Rarities: On the first issues the treads on the rear wheels were cut straight across the face of the wheel but were soon modified to diagonal treads. The final run was mistakenly fitted with wheels with a smoooth face that were intended for the (Y11-1) Aveling & Porter Road Roller.
There are two variations to look out for which affect value. Firstly look at the treads on the rear wheels, if they are cast at an angle you have the commonly found version, unless the treads are painted red in which case you get a very small premium. Straight-cut treads get a nice premium, but smooth wheels are rare and valuable.
The other variation to look for is the colour of the smoke box door - the round surface on the front of the engine - most of these are painted copper, silver or gold. If they have been left the same green as the rest of the engine then you get a good premium.
Other minor variations were crimped or riveted axles and the cab floor which had 9 slats which was increased to 11 on the later issues.

Collector Notes: The Smooth rear wheels is a commonly faked variation, pay close attention to axle ends for signs of tampering.
There have been reports of some models having a steerable front axle, this is presumed to be a pre-production variation that was not carried over into the released version.

The Allchin was discontinued in 1965 after 9 years in production which is a very long time for any Lesney model.
